Pre-staging is the practice of gathering and positioning all parts and materials a job needs at the workstation before the operator starts. In welding it means each station has a complete, ready kit so the welder can grab and weld.

A support person or upstream process does the kitting, freeing the skilled welder to spend their time welding rather than searching. Everything is presented at the place the work is done, in the sequence it will be used.

It pairs with a strict discipline about strays: parts that do not belong at a station are pulled out of circulation so they cannot be mistaken for the correct kit. In this shop that meant throwing away parts found outside the kitting system so no one would fish them back out.
