Lean Toolbox is a searchable library of real Lean improvements. Each one is clipped from a factory-tour video and linked to the exact second it appears.
What this is
Good Lean ideas get mentioned in passing on a plant walk, then buried in an hour of video. They are hard to find and harder to find again. Lean Toolbox pulls each one out and turns it into a single entry: what the improvement is, which waste it targets, who filmed it, and where.
Where the improvements come from
Every entry comes from a public factory-tour video. We watch the tour, mark the moment a real improvement appears, and record the timestamp. Nothing is staged or invented. Each entry credits the creator who filmed it and the company whose floor it is, and links back to the full video.

- 5SSort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain
- A workplace organization method built on five steps: sort out what is not needed, set the rest in an obvious place, shine and clean, standardize the setup, and sustain the habit. The goal is a floor where anything out of place is immediately visible.

- Andon
- A signal, often a light or board, that lets any worker flag a problem the moment it happens. Pulling the andon calls for help and, when needed, stops the line so the issue is fixed at the source instead of passed downstream.

- GembaGenba, The real place
- The actual place where work is done, such as the shop floor. A gemba walk means going to see the process first-hand rather than relying on reports, because the facts of the work live where the work happens.
- HeijunkaLevel scheduling, Production leveling
- Leveling production so volume and mix stay even over time instead of swinging between rushes and idle spells. Smoothing the schedule this way reduces the strain and overload that uneven demand pushes onto people and equipment.

- Building the ability to detect a defect into the process, so a machine or line stops itself when something goes wrong. This keeps bad parts from moving on and frees people from watching machines just to catch faults.

- Just-in-Time (JIT)JIT, Just in time
- Making and moving only what is needed, when it is needed, in the amount needed. Parts arrive just as the next step calls for them, which shrinks inventory and exposes problems that large buffers would otherwise hide.

- KaizenContinuous improvement
- Continuous, incremental improvement driven by the people doing the work. Small changes made often, and a focused kaizen event when a problem needs a concentrated push, add up to large gains over time.

- KanbanSignal card
- A signal, classically a card, that authorizes the next batch of work or the replenishment of a part only when it is actually consumed. Kanban is the practical mechanism that runs a pull system and limits work in progress.

- A repeated, structured routine for practicing improvement and coaching until scientific thinking becomes a habit. Working step by step toward a target condition trains people to experiment their way past obstacles rather than jump to solutions.

- MudaWaste
- The Japanese term for waste: any activity that consumes resources without adding value for the customer. Lean names distinct forms of waste (such as overproduction, waiting, and defects) so teams can spot and remove them; on this site each form is a browsable category.

- MuraUnevenness
- Unevenness in flow or workload, the peaks and valleys that come from an uneven schedule or demand. Mura creates waste and overload elsewhere in the system, which is why leveling the work matters.

- MuriOverburden
- Overburden: pushing people or equipment beyond a reasonable, sustainable limit. Muri leads to fatigue, breakdowns, and errors, and it often traces back to unevenness in how work arrives.

- One-piece flowContinuous flow, Single-piece flow
- Moving one unit at a time through the steps of a process instead of building and passing large batches. Continuous flow shortens lead time, surfaces defects immediately, and cuts the inventory that sits between steps.

- PDCAPlan-Do-Check-Act, Deming cycle, PDSA
- A four-step improvement loop: Plan a change, Do it on a small scale, Check the results against what you expected, and Act to adopt, adjust, or discard. Repeating the cycle turns improvement into a disciplined experiment.

- Poka-yokeMistake-proofing, Error-proofing
- A device or design that makes an error hard or impossible, such as a fixture that only accepts a part the right way around. Mistake-proofing prevents defects at the source rather than trying to catch them later by inspection.

- Pull systemPull production
- A system where each step produces only in response to a real signal from the next step, so demand pulls work through the line. Pull replaces pushing to a forecast, which keeps inventory low and matches output to actual need.

- SMED (single-minute exchange of dies)SMED, Quick changeover, Single-minute exchange of dies
- A method for cutting changeover time between products, ideally into single digits of minutes. Separating setup work that can be done while the machine still runs from work that requires it to stop makes small batches and quick switching practical.

- The current best-known, agreed way to do a task, written down as the baseline everyone follows. It makes results repeatable and gives improvement a stable starting point, since you can only improve against a known standard.

- Takt timeTakt
- The pace of customer demand, calculated as available working time divided by the units the customer needs in that time. Matching production to takt keeps output in step with demand, neither racing ahead nor falling behind.

- Value stream (mapping)VSM, Value stream mapping
- The full sequence of steps, both value-adding and not, that carries a product or service from start to delivery. Value stream mapping draws that flow, including information and delays, so a team can see where waste hides and where to improve.

- Making the state of the work visible at a glance through boards, markings, and simple signals, so normal and abnormal are obvious to anyone. Good visual management lets problems announce themselves without a meeting or a report.
